This transcript is for our film, The Run.

[Gentle instrumental music]

[Wide shot of Tom standing on a running track, back to camera]

[Therapist voiceover]

– So, Tom, I wanted to ask, how's everything going?

[Close-up of Tom smiling, then cut to therapist’s face. Tom nods.]

[Coach]

– On your marks, set...

[Whistle trills]

[Tom lines up with other children for a race]

[Somber instrumental music]

[Tom opens his eyes in bed, gets up slowly]

[Footsteps patter]

[Tom runs in school uniform, then transitions to running on the track again]

[School bell rings]

– Sorry, love. We're done.

[Tom arrives late to school. Classroom door is closed.]

[Coach]

– These are from lost property. Stick them on.

[Tom looks embarrassed in ill-fitting PE kit. He runs awkwardly in shoes

that don’t fit.]

[Therapist voiceover]

– Yeah, you know, it's... it's been different.

[Tom sits in therapist’s office, looking slightly more positive]

[Parents arguing. Tom looks upset.]

[Door slams. Tom runs out.]

[Footsteps patter. Somber music continues.]

[Tom runs on the track, struggling.]

[Tom voiceover]

– I was tired.

[Man]

– I'm gonna need you to make a delivery for us. Okay?

[Tom is handed drugs by a group of men.]

[Somber music continues]

[Tom shakes his head and runs away.]

[Men shouting]

– Hey, boy! Where you going?

[Tom keeps running.]

[Tom voiceover]

– I suppose I felt like giving in.

[Back in therapist’s office.]

[Footsteps patter. Crowd cheers.]

[Tom runs the race again.]

[Therapist]

– So, d'you know what foster care is?

[She hands Tom a photo of his new foster parents.]

[Gentle instrumental music]

[Tom looks at the photo.]

[Support group scene]

– Just them knowing that you're around...

– ...and that they can go to you if they want to.

[Foster parents listen attentively.]

[Footsteps patter. Crowd cheers.]

[Tom runs in the race again.]

[Tom voiceover]

– It's not what I expected.

[Tom runs to his new home.]

[Family kitchen scene]

– Is our puppy coming in?

– Yeah. Mia has biscuits.

[Family making breakfast. Sister fills dog bowl.]

[Therapist]

– In what way?

[Tom reflects.]

[Foster mum and sister making dinner. Foster dad folds towels.]

– I thought they'd let me down like everybody else.

– You don't know how it's gonna go.

[Dinner scene]

– I've been here a while now. It's really okay.

[Foster sister smiles at Tom.]

[Therapist]

– I didn’t know who they were or why they would care.

[Tom receives new running trainers.]

[Tom voiceover]

– About me. Yes.

[Tom admires his new trainers.]

[Footsteps patter]

[Tom runs in his new trainers.]

[Tom voiceover]

– At first, I just wanted to run.

– Just kicked my foot and I went like...

[Tom talks to foster mum in kitchen.]

[Porcelain shatters]

[Tom knocks a cup off the counter and runs away.]

[Gentle music continues]

[Tom peers around the corner, scared.]

[Foster Mom]

– Tom, it's all right.

[Foster Dad]

– I'll clean it up.

[Therapist]

– And now, d'you still want to run?

[Crowd cheers. Gentle music continues.]

[Tom runs in his race.]

[Foster family cheering]

– Come on! Come on!

– Yes! Yes!

[Montage: Tom playing with dog, doing homework, laughing, running with

foster mum.]

[Foster family cheering]

– He came third! (laughs)

[Therapist]

– Yeah. Yes, I do.

[Tom smiles.]

[Foster family]

– Yeah!

– My boy! Look what you did!

– I'm so proud!

– I'm so proud of you!

– And next time, I'm gonna win.

[family chatters]
[gentle music continues]
